    Detection of curved lines with B-COSFIRE filters: A case study on crack delineation

    The detection of curvilinear structures is an important step for various computer vision applications, ranging from medical image analysis for segmentation of blood vessels, to remote sensing for the identification of roads and rivers, and to biometrics and robotics, among others. %The visual system of the brain has remarkable abilities to detect curvilinear structures in noisy images. This is a nontrivial task especially for the detection of thin or incomplete curvilinear structures surrounded with noise. We propose a general purpose curvilinear structure detector that uses the brain-inspired trainable B-COSFIRE filters. It consists of four main steps, namely nonlinear filtering with B-COSFIRE, thinning with non-maximum suppression, hysteresis thresholding and morphological closing. We demonstrate its effectiveness on a data set of noisy images with cracked pavements, where we achieve state-of-the-art results (F-measure=0.865). The proposed method can be employed in any computer vision methodology that requires the delineation of curvilinear and elongated structures.Comment: Accepted at Computer Analysis of Images and Patterns (CAIP) 201

    Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine-related disease in HIV-infected children: a systematic review

    Objective: To describe the characteristics and risk of bacille Calmette-Gu&eacute;rin (BCG) vaccine related disease in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected infants.Methods: Systematic literature review of articles published from 1950 to April 2009 in the English language. We identified all microbiologically confirmed cases of disseminated BCG disease in vertically HIV-infected children reported in the literature.Results: Sixteen observational studies and 11 case reports/series were included. Observational studies suffered from high rates of loss to follow-up and death. Loco-regional BCG disease was reported in both HIV-infected and non-infected children. Disseminated BCG disease was reported only in children with immunodeficiency and only in studies employing sophisticated laboratory techniques. Sixty-nine cases of disseminated BCG were identified in the literature: 47 cases were reported in six observational studies, the majority (41/47) from the Western Cape of South Africa. A Brazilian cohort study reported no cases of disseminated BCG amongst 66 HIV-infected children observed over a 7-year period. A recent South African surveillance study reported 32 cases of disseminated BCG over a 3-year period, estimating the risk of disseminated BCG to be 992 per 100&thinsp;000 vaccinations in HIV-infected children. Few cases of severe disseminated TB were reported in the cohort studies among HIV-infected children vaccinated with BCG.Conclusion: Data on the risk of BCG vaccination in HIV-infected children are limited. Targeted surveillance for BCG complications employing sophisticated diagnostic techniques is required to inform vaccination policy.<br /

    The Massive Wolf-Rayet Binary SMC WR7

    We present a study of optical spectra of the Wolf--Rayet star AzV 336a (= SMC WR7) in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our study is based on data obtained at several Observatories between 1988 and 2001. We find SMC WR7 to be a double lined WN+O6 spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 19.56 days. The radial velocities of the He absorption lines of the O6 component and the strong He{\sc ii} emission at λ\lambda4686\AA of the WN component describe antiphased orbital motions. However, they show a small phase shift of \sim 1 day. We discuss possible explanations for this phase shift. The amplitude of the radial velocity variations of He {\sc ii} emission is twice that of the absorption lines. The binary components have fairly high minimum masses, \sim 18 \modot and 34 \modot for the WN and O6 components, respectively.Comment: Accepted by MNRA

    A Search for Wolf-Rayet Stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud

    We conducted an extensive search for Wolf-Rayet stars (W-Rs) in the SMC, using the same interference filter imaging techniques that have proved successful in finding W-Rs in more distant members of the Local Group. Photometry of some 1.6 million stellar images resulted in some 20 good candidates, which we then examined spectroscopically. Two of these indeed proved to be newly found W-Rs, bringing the total known in the SMC from 9 to 11. Other finds included previously unknown Of-type stars (one as early as O5f?p)),the recovery of the Luminous Blue Variable S18, and the discovery of a previously unknown SMC symbiotic star. More important, however, is the fact that there does not exist a significant number of W-Rs waiting to be discovered in the SMC. The number of W-Rs in the SMC is a factor of 3 lower than in the LMC (per unit luminosity), and we argue this is the result of the SMC's low metallicity on the evolution of the most massive stars.Comment: Accepted by Astrophysical Journal.     Digital Data Sources and Their Impact on People's Health: A Systematic Review of Systematic Reviews

    Background: Digital data sources have become ubiquitous in modern culture in the era of digital technology but often tend to be under-researched because of restricted access to data sources due to fragmentation, privacy issues, or industry ownership, and the methodological complexity of demonstrating their measurable impact on human health. Even though new big data sources have shown unprecedented potential for disease diagnosis and outbreak detection, we need to investigate results in the existing literature to gain a comprehensive understanding of their impact on and benefits to human health. / Objective: A systematic review of systematic reviews on identifying digital data sources and their impact area on people's health, including challenges, opportunities, and good practices. Methods: A multidatabase search was performed. Peer-reviewed papers published between January 2010 and November 2020 relevant to digital data sources on health were extracted, assessed, and reviewed. / Results: The 64 reviews are covered by three domains, that is, universal health coverage (UHC), public health emergencies, and healthier populations, defined in WHO's General Programme of Work, 2019-2023, and the European Programme of Work, 2020-2025. In all three categories, social media platforms are the most popular digital data source, accounting for 47% (N = 8), 84% (N = 11), and 76% (N = 26) of studies, respectively. The second most utilized data source are electronic health records (EHRs) (N = 13), followed by websites (N = 7) and mass media (N = 5). In all three categories, the most studied impact of digital data sources is on prevention, management, and intervention of diseases (N = 40), and as a tool, there are also many studies (N = 10) on early warning systems for infectious diseases. However, they could also pose health hazards (N = 13), for instance, by exacerbating mental health issues and promoting smoking and drinking behavior among young people. / Conclusions: The digital data sources presented are essential for collecting and mining information about human health. The key impact of social media, electronic health records, and websites is in the area of infectious diseases and early warning systems, and in the area of personal health, that is, on mental health and smoking and drinking prevention. However, further research is required to address privacy, trust, transparency, and interoperability to leverage the potential of data held in multiple datastores and systems. This study also identified the apparent gap in systematic reviews investigating the novel big data streams, Internet of Things (IoT) data streams, and sensor, mobile, and GPS data researched using artificial intelligence, complex network, and other computer science methods, as in this domain systematic reviews are not common

    Terminal velocities of luminous, early-type SMC stars

    Ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) are used to determine terminal velocities for 11 O and B-type giants and supergiants in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) from the Si IV and C IV resonance lines. Using archival data from observations with the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph and the International Ultraviolet Explorer telescope, terminal velocities are obtained for a further five B-type supergiants. We discuss the metallicity dependence of stellar terminal velocities, finding no evidence for a significant scaling between Galactic and SMC metallicities for Teff < 30,000 K, consistent with the predictions of radiation driven wind theory for supergiant stars. A comparison of the v/vescv_\infty / v_{esc} ratio between the SMC and Galactic samples, while consistent with the above statement, emphasizes that the uncertainties in the distances to galactic O-stars are a serious obstacle to a detailed comparison with theory. For the SMC sample there is considerable scatter in this ratio at a given effective temperature, perhaps indicative of uncertainties in stellar masses.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, accepted by ApJ; minor revisions prior to acceptanc

    Offline handwritten signature verification using radial basis function neural network

    This study investigates the effectiveness of Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNNs) for Of- fline Handwritten Signature Verification (OHSV). A signature database is collected using intrapersonal variations for evaluation. Global, grid and texture features are used as feature sets. A number of exper- iments were carried out to compare the effectiveness of each separate set and their combination. The system is extensively tested with random signature forgeries and the high recognition rates obtained demonstrate the effectiveness of the architecture. The best results are obtained when global and grid features are combined producing a feature vector of 592 elements. In this case a Mean Error Rate (MER) of 2.04% with a False Rejection Rate (FRR) of 1.58% and a False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of 2.5% are achieved, which are generally better than those reported in the literature.peer-reviewe

    A UBVR CCD Survey of the Magellanic Clouds

    We present photometry and a preliminary interpretation of a UBVR survey of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We determine improved values for the relative number of blue and red supergiants.
